현대 개량악기가 아닌 클라비코드, 하프시코드 그리고 오르간에 깃들어 있는 독특한 감정을 쏟아내며 메시야의 반주에 꽃인 트렘펫을 원전당시의 악기 클라리노가 대신하는 정격연주 메시야입니다. 당대의 작곡가 의도대로 연주 하기 위해 합창단도 30명 내외이고 오케스트라도 챔버수준의 솔로이스트입니다. 2001년에 소개 하여 드렸던 칼 리히터,런던필하모닉과는 완전히 다른 해석이 나올 것입니다. 해석 또한 당시의 고증을 많이 참고하여 당대의 해석 그대로 연주 하려고 노력 하였다고 합니다.지나친 감정이 이입되는 끌고 당김, 그리고 고의적으로 늘리는 테누토, 리타르단도 등의 기법을 남발하지 않고 악보에 충실 하였다고 합니다. 그리고 합창곡 정격연주의 백미를 위해 보이소프라노를 기용한 것도 노력의 흔적이라 할 수 있습니다. 영어권 메시아가 그러하듯 역시 빠른 템포로 연주하고 있습니다.

1959년 녹음한 것입니다. 처음에는 LP로 나왔던 것이 현재는 3장의 CD 로 만들어져 판매되고 있습니다. 가디너나 칼리히터의 메시야에 비하면 매우 느리게 연주됩니다. 반면에 웅장하고 규모가 있습니다. 대규모 합창단과 오케스트라가 참여했습니다.제 개인적으로는 다른 곡들에 비해 더 감동적인듯 합니다. 연주 도중에 틈틈이 섞인 심벌즈와 트라이앵글, 그리고 하프가 좀 생소하긴 하지만 테누토, 리타르단도등의 기법과 걸맞는것 같아 감흥이 더합니다. 가디너의 곡이 원전연주를 위해 보이소프라노를 참여 시킨 것은 당시의 재연을 위해서라는 면에서는 좋긴 한데 아마추어적인 느낌을 배제하지는 못합니다. 그러나 비첨경의 메시야에는 전문 성악가들이 참여하고 있어서 다른 생각없이 음악에 감동할 수 있습니다. 특히 베이스 지오르지오 토찌의 48번 곡 The Trumpet Shall Sound 에서는 압도당할 수 밖에 없을 것입니다.

제 1 부 예언 , 탄생

내 백성을 위로하라.. 모든 골짜기 높아지리라

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Tenor) Comfort ye, comfort ye My people, saith your God; speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem; and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness:
-Prepare ye the way of the Lord: make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

40:1 너희 하나님이 가라사대 너희는 위로하라 내 백성을 위로하라
40:2 너희는 정다이 예루살렘에 말하며 그것에게 외쳐 고하라 그 복역의 때가 끝났고 그 죄악의 사함을 입었느니라 그 모든 죄를 인하여 여호와의 손에서 배나 받았느니라 할지니라

40:4 골짜기마다 돋우어지며 산마다, 작은 산마다 낮아지며 고르지 않은 곳이 평탄케 되며 험한 곳이 평지가 될 것이요

만군의 주가 말씀하신다. 주 오시는 날 누가 능히 당하리

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Bass) Thus saith the Lord of Hosts:

-Yet once a little while and I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land; and I will shake all nations; and the desire of all nations shall come. The Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to His temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, He shall come, saith the Lord of Hosts.

2:6 나 만군의 여호와가 말하노라 조금 있으면 내가 하늘과 땅과 바다와 육지를 진동시킬 것이요

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Bass) For Behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people; but the Lord shall rise upon thee, and His glory shall be seen upon thee, and the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

60:2 보라 어두움이 땅을 덮을 것이며 캄캄함이 만민을 가리우려니와 오직 여호와께서 네 위에 임하실 것이며 그 영광이 네 위에 나타나리니
60:3 열방은 네 빛으로, 열왕은 비취는 네 광명으로 나아오리라
40:9 아름다운 소식을 시온에 전하는 자여 너는 높은 산에 오르라 아름다운 소식을 예루살렘에 전하는 자여 너는 힘써 소리를 높이라 두려워 말고 소리를 높여 유다의 성읍들에 이르기를 너희 하나님을 보라 하라

AIR (Bass) The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; and they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

우리를 위해 나셨다

CHORUS For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder; and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

9:6 이는 한 아기가 우리에게 났고 한 아들을 우리에게 주신 바 되었는데 그 어깨에는 정사를 메었고 그 이름은 기묘자라, 모사라, 전능하신 하나님이라, 영존하시는 아버지라, 평강의 왕이라 할 것임이라

RECITATIVE. (Soprano) There were shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Soprano) And lo! the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were sore afraid.

RECITATIVE. (Soprano) And the angel said unto thee, Fear not; for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people; for unto you is born this day in the City of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

[11] No.17 Chorus: Glory to God in the highest 주께 영광

CHORUS Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth,

goodwill towards men.

2:14 지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님께 영광이요 땅에서는 기뻐하심을 입은 사람들 중에 평화로다 하니라

[12] No.18 Air soprano: Rejoice greatly , O daughter of Zion 시온의 딸아, 크게 기뻐하라

AIR. (Soprano) Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion Shout,
O daughter of Jerusalem! behold, thy King cometh unto thee!
He is the righteous Saviour and He shall speak peace unto the heathen.

9:9 시온의 딸아 크게 기뻐할지어다 예루살렘의 딸아 즐거이 부를지어다 보라 네 왕이 네게 임하나니 그는 공의로우며 구원을 베풀며 겸손하여서 나귀를 타나니 나귀의 작은 것 곧 나귀새끼니라

RECITATIVE. (Alto) Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall sing.

AIR (Come unto Him, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and He will give you rest. Take His yoke upon you, and learn of Him, for He is meek and lowly of heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

11:28 수고하고 무거운 짐진 자들아 다 내게로 오라 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라

AIR (Alto) He was the most despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. He gave His back to the smiters, and His cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: He hid not His face from shame and spitting.

53:3 그는 멸시를 받아서 사람에게 싫어 버린 바 되었으며 간고를 많이 겪었으며 질고를 아는 자라 마치 사람들에게 얼굴을 가리우고 보지 않음을 받는 자 같아서 멸시를 당하였고 우리도 그를 귀히 여기지 아니하였도다
50:6 나를 때리는 자들에게 내 등을 맡기며 나의 수염을 뽑는 자들에게 나의 뺨을 맡기며 수욕과 침 뱉음을 피하려고 내 얼굴을 가리우지 아니하였느니라

[3] No.24 Chorus: Surely he hath borne our griefs 진실로 주는 괴로움을 맡으셨네

CHORUS Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows! He was wounded for our transgressions; He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him. And with His stripes we are healed.

53:4 그는 실로 우리의 질고를 지고 우리의 슬픔을 당하였거늘 우리는 생각하기를 그는 징벌을 받아서 하나님에게 맞으며 고난을 당한다 하였노라

They rebuke hath broken his heart .. Behold and see

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Tenor) Thy rebuke hath broken His heart; He is full of heaviness. He looked for some to have pity on Him, but there was no man, neither found He any to comfort Him.

69:20 훼방이 내 마음을 상하여 근심이 충만하니 긍휼히 여길 자를 바라나 없고 안위할 자를 바라나 찾지 못하였나이다

AIR. (Tenor) Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto His sorrow.

1:12 무릇 지나가는 자여 너희에게는 관계가 없는가 내게 임한 근심 같은 근심이 있는가 볼지어다

[8] Nos.31/32 Recitative & Air tenor: He was cut off out of the land of the living ... But thou didst not leave his soul in hell 산자들의 땅에서 끊어지셨네... 여호와는 주의 영을 버리지 아니하셨네

RECITATIVE. (Accompanied - Soprano) He was cut off out of the land of the living; for the transgression of Thy people was He stricken.

53:8 그가 곤욕과 심문을 당하고 끌려갔으니 그 세대 중에 누가 생각하기를 그가 산 자의 땅에서 끊어짐은 마땅히 형벌받을 내 백성의 허물을 인함이라 하였으리요

AIR(Soprano) But Thou didst not leave His soul in hell;
nor didst Thou suffer Thy Holy one to see corruption.

16:10 이는 내 영혼을 음부에 버리지 아니하시며 주의 거룩한 자로 썩지 않게 하실 것임이니이다

CHORUS Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors, and the King of Glory shall come in. Who is the King of Glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. CHORUS Their sound is gone out into all lands, and their words unto the ends of the world.

AIR (Bass) Why do the nations so furiously rage together, and who do the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth rise up, and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord, and against His Anointed.

2:1 어찌하여 열방이 분노하며 민족들이 허사를 경영하는고
2:2 세상의 군왕들이 나서며 관원들이 서로 꾀하여 여호와와 그 기름받은 자를 대적하며

CHORUSLet us break their bonds asunder, and cast away their yokes from us.

[1] No.45 Air soprano: I know that my Redeemer liveth 주가 살아계심을 나는 안다.

AIR (Soprano) I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth; and though worms destroy this body yet, in my flesh shall I see God. For now is Christ risen from the dead, the firs-fruits of them that sleep.

19:25 내가 알기에는 나의 구속자가 살아 계시니 후일에 그가 땅 위에 서실 것이라
19:26 나의 이 가죽, 이것이 썩은 후에 내가 육체 밖에서 하나님을 보리라

We shall not all sleep; but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.

15:51 보라 내가 너희에게 비밀을 말하노니 우리가 다 잠잘 것이 아니요 마지막 나팔에 순식간에 홀연히 다 변화하리니

AIR. (Bass) The trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
